Just before He ascended to heaven, Jesus told the disciples to baptize and teach to all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). In the English Standard Version of the Bible, the word "teach" appears 269 times, another indication of its importance! Education has always been a cornerstone of the Lutheran faith. Martin Luther wrote and preached extensively on the topic of Christian Education.

[God] has not given you your children and the means to support them simply so that you may do with them as you please, or train them just to get ahead in the world. You have been earnestly commanded to raise them for God’s service.
- Martin Luther, A Sermon on Keeping Children in School (1530)
